Dodgers place Clayton Kershaw on the DL with biceps tendinitis

first_imgThey have seen enough of the adversity, watching it pile on during this trip. Since the Dodgers left Los Angeles on April 26, they have placed outfielder Yasiel Puig (foot contusion), shortstop Corey Seager (Tommy John surgery), left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (groin injury) and now Kershaw on the DL. They join third baseman Justin Turner (fractured wrist), left-hander Rich Hill (finger injury), infielder Logan Forsythe (shoulder inflammation) and right-hander Tom Koehler (shoulder strain).“We have to move forward,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Clayton, I know he’s frustrated. He’s had to deal with a few things the past couple years. He wants to carry the load. So with each of the players you kind of feel for these guys.“But when you’re trying to still win baseball games, it’s still that ‘next-man-up’ mentality. It sounds insensitive but that’s kind of the way it has to be.”This is the third time in the past four seasons Kershaw has landed on the DL. In 2014, it was a strain of the teres major muscle in the back of his pitching shoulder that sidelined him for six weeks at the start of the season. In 2016, it was a mild disc herniation in his lower back that sidelined him for 75 games in mid-season. Last year, a lower back strain sent him to the DL for five weeks.Sign up for our Inside the Dodgers newsletter. Be the best Dodger fan you can be by getting daily intel on your favorite team. But they have been dropping parts along the way like a high-mileage Buick Skylark.Clayton Kershaw became the latest Dodger to go on the DL when he left the team Sunday and traveled back to Los Angeles to be examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. The initial diagnosis of biceps tendinitis was confirmed by an MRI. No timetable has been given for Kershaw’s return.“Obviously it’s been tough,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. “But injuries are part of the game and we’ve seen this team respond to adversity in years past when others had kind of written us off. We expect to do the same thing.“We haven’t quite clicked yet with all our various components to surge through that adversity. We haven’t seen that yet. But we expect we will.” Dodgers’ Dave Roberts says baseball’s unwritten rules ‘have changed, should change’ Dodgers’ hot-hitting Corey Seager leaves game with back injury center_img “We don’t think it will be a long-term thing,” Friedman said. “There are no indications that this is anything serious, anything beyond biceps tendinitis and that’s how we’re thinking about it right now.”The Dodgers had already pushed Kershaw’s next start back to Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, giving him six days’ rest between outings. But he was unable to throw his usual between-starts bullpen session Saturday.“I think throughout his career he’s had different bouts of biceps tendinitis that he pitched through,” Roberts said. “I got word from the training staff yesterday when he tried to play catch that it just wasn’t feeling right. So obviously there was a different level of discomfort to not warrant continuing to throw and to accept going on the disabled list and going back to see Dr. ElAttrache. That’s a little unsettling. But we’ll know more after Dr. ElAttrache sees him.”That news makes Roberts’ post-game announcement Saturday more understandable. He told reporters that Hill would not be starting Sunday as expected – and Hill then told reporters he was “good to go.”Instead, Hill will come off the DL and start Tuesday with Alex Wood on Wednesday.Right-hander Brock Stewart was recalled from Triple-A to take Kershaw’s place on the roster.GOOD NEWSThere were some positive developments on the injury front Sunday.Turner took batting practice on the field with the team for the first time since suffering his wrist injury on March 19. The next step is a simulated game, possibly as soon as Wednesday which would be the last step before a minor-league injury-rehabilitation assignment later this week.Turner has been swinging a bat for several days now and said he has had no pain in his injured wrist.Puig will make a one-game rehab visit to Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday, Roberts said, and then is expected to come off the DL and rejoin the Dodgers Wednesday.Related Articles Dodgers bench slumping Cody Bellinger for a day And Forsythe has continued his rehab in Arizona but could begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City this week.ALSOThe Dodgers signed former major-league infielder Danny Espinosa to a minor-league deal and he made his debut with Triple-A Oklahoma City, playing shortstop and going 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.Espinosa, 31, started the season in the Toronto Blue Jays’ system and batted .232 in 13 games with Triple-A Buffalo before opting out of his contract. He spent seven seasons (2010-16) with the Washington Nationals and had two 20-homer seasons. He split last season between the Angels, Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners, batting a combined .173.
