Hoboken mayoral hopeful announces slate for council

first_imgHOBOKEN — On Friday Council President Jen Giattino announced her ticket for council people at large. The mayor and three council-at-large seats are up for election in November.“They share my vision for Hoboken and know that this race is all about serving Hoboken and connecting our community: James Aibel, Sal Starace and Jason Ellis,” states Giattino in an email blast from her campaign.Aibel is a 40-year Hoboken resident and current chairman of the Hoboken Zoning Board of Adjustment. He has served on the board for about eight years.“He serves our community well in this role by enforcing our zoning code and holding firm against unplanned, ad hoc development that is inconsistent with our Master Plan and/or risks overburdening our city’s infrastructure,” the email states. “He is passionate about land use and wants to ensure we create a robust, strategic plan that makes sense for Hoboken and update our zoning code to more effectively manage our growth.”Starace is a 14-year Hoboken resident and father of three.According to the email, he is a career construction union representative “and knows what it is like to represent the interests of large, diverse groups of people and work collaboratively and sometimes have difficult conversations in order to come to the best outcomes for those he represents.”Ellis, a 10-year Hoboken resident, has two children who attend Wallace Elementary School.“He is a finance professional by day and will be focused on making sure we keep taxes stable, build out and maintain our parks and open space, and get the most for Hoboken out of each development that gets built in Hoboken,” Giattino says in the email. ×last_img read more

Esquires Coffee continues expansion with new sites

first_imgFranchised coffee chain Esquires Coffee has added two stores in Balham, London, and Esher, Surrey.Esquires acquired the pre-existing coffee house Lavish Habit in Balham on 7 August, while the second store in Esher will open on 25 August and will be the fourth Esquires Coffee house for franchise owner Chris Rance. The stores will specialise in organic coffee, hot chocolate, fruit smoothies and brunch-inspired menus including avocado on toast and smoked salmon bagels as well as “coffee shop sweet treats”.“With rent and rates in main city centres becoming increasingly unaffordable, creating destination coffee shops that serve and act as the hub of the community in suburban locations makes better business sense for Esquires Coffee franchise owners,” said Esquires Coffee marketing manager Kerry Noble. The openings will take the firm’s total number of sites to 31 and it aims to open three more in Yate (Glos), Hanley (Staffs) and Liverpool by the end of the year.“We are recruiting new franchisees for single and multistore units, as well as through the acquisition of smaller existing coffee chains should the opportunity arise,” Noble added. The company revealed to British Baker that it has ambitions to have 200 outlets by 2021 in the UK.last_img read more

Guyana’s economy has to “right” itself – Jordan

first_img…admits to shortfall in economyWhile the ordinary man may feel that the country’s economic standard is deteriorating, Finance Minister Winston Jordan has assured that the existing state of affairs is an indication that the economy is in fact “righting” itself. The Minister made the disclosure during an interview on a local radio program “Jumpstart” on Monday where he discussed exclusively the fiscal matters of the country.Finance Minister Winston JordanAccording to Jordan, it would seem that some five years ago, the economy was moving ahead, however, there has not been much sustainability, and that the sectors that once propelled the economy, have now lost their way.“The same things that was generating the growth, after 50 years they still remained. (Rice, sugar, gold, forestry, bauxite). A number of these sectors have collapsed…banks that loaned to these sectors will also have a difficult time doing business in the future because the resources are not there and their bad loan have gone up,” Jordan said.According to him, the economy has to right itself, but yet, cannot do so on its own.“For persons who went through the 80’s and 90’s of the restructuring of the economy by the IMF (International Monetary Fund) , if we don’t adjust the economy, we will have to hand it over to somebody to do it,” the Finance Minister said.Jordan related that during this period, the economy has to be prepared for what is called the “take off” because on the horizon, there is high inflow of foreigners to the country and “we have to prepare the economy for that”.The Minister said Government has to move ahead and get its $250 billion 2017 National Budget going. This, he said, is currently stymied by numerous factors including transparency and scrutiny.Meanwhile, Jordan said Guyana’s economy is not where it needs to be, it does not stand alone, especially when compared with neighboring countries.“We know of Suriname, Trinidad, and Barbados which recently had to fire its governor. They had to hire their former Prime Minister Owen Arthur as their chief economic adviser to help them come out of their troubles…Venezuela we know what is going on there and Brazil has its issues,” Jordan saidHe continued that in all of these “oceans of problems”, Guyana remains a light of progress. He reminded that last November Government had projected a 2.6 per cent growth but with the actual numbers coming in now, the economy saw a 3.2 per cent growth last year, which he said was better than 2015.“While this growth was led by gold, there was some good showing in the Agriculture Sector, other crops sector and a last push to the last half of the year through the implementation of the public sector program, gave a little bump over the edge,” he said.Foreign exchangeThe Finance Minister meanwhile admitted that there have been some issues with foreign exchange, however he maintained that there remains a reserve of over $600 million in the country’s central bank. He said the rates have been stabilized, although with a depreciation between $210 and $215.As it relates to the reports of shortages in foreign exchange here, Jordan reminded that it is gold that is generating the foreign exchange.“There is a couple of big gold dealers, and some of them do not declare the rightful amount they get from overseas and the BoG Governor is trying to work with them”. He said the law provides that all foreign exchange must be declared to a bank for exporters.Jordan lamented that sectors areas that had a huge hand in bringing in foreign exchange are not there. However, despite that, the holdings of Foreign exchange in the commercial banks have not reduced in any way significant, he assured.last_img read more

Moville progressed to the county semi final after a hard earned but thoroughly deserved win over old rivals, St Eunans in Letterkenny last Friday night. With the scores level at half time at 1-05 apiece it was all to play for in the second half.  St Eunan’s started brighter and led early in the second half by four points at one stage but Moville finished the stronger to win by four.  Moville used all five substitutes tonight and they were all required in what was a great all round squad performance. It would impossible to single out any individual performance such was the all round performance of the team, but goalkeeper Chloe Moir deserves a mention for her wonder save to keep Moville in the game at a time when Eunan’s were ahead by 3. In fact it proved the turning point in the game as it lifted the Moville team who pushed on from that point to win. Their opponents in the semi final will not be known for a few weeks yet.SENIOR MEN CONTINUE THEIR FINE RUN OF VICTORIES In trying weather conditions the Moville senior men team defeated Robert Emmet’s in Castlefin by a score of 0-08 to 0-05. Star Bulk Narrows 2Q Loss as Revenues Rise

first_imgzoom Greek dry bulk shipping firm Star Bulk has managed to reduce its loss for the second quarter of this year to USD 10.3 million from USD 32.9 million posted in the same quarter a year earlier.Net loss for the first half of this year stood at USD 26.2 million, against a net loss of USD 81.7 million recorded in 1H 2016.In 2Q 2017, total net voyage revenues were USD 62 million, compared to USD 34.9 million seen in the second quarter of 2016. This increase was primarily driven by the increase in charter hire rates, which led to a TCE rate of USD 9,746 compared to a TCE rate of USD 5,609 in the same period last year, representing a 74% rise.“Given our Q2 2017 average OPEX and net cash G&A expenses per vessel … we have an adjusted EBITDA of USD 25.7 million, compared to an adjusted EBITDA figure of USD 1.6 million in Q2 2016. This marks the fifth consecutive increase in our quarterly Adjusted EBITDA since the first quarter of 2016 when the dry bulk market troughed,” Petros Pappas, Chief Executive Officer of Star Bulk, commented. In July, the company took delivery of MV Diva, a Supramax vessel with carrying capacity of 56,582 dwt, built at Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry China in 2011.Furthermore, in August, the company paid USD 3.6 million to all parties under its restructuring agreements, representing the 20% of the equity used for the acquisition of Star Charis, Star Suzanna and Diva.Star Bulk inked in June a new loan agreement with ABN AMRO Bank for USD 30.8 million to partially finance the acquisition of two Kamsarmaxes bought earlier this year and to refinance all of the outstanding debt under the Heron Vessel CiT Facility.“On the financing front, we have drawn down the full facility amount to partially finance the acquisition of the 2 … Kamsarmaxes …, which along with the successful refinancing in full of one of our bank facilities, demonstrates the solid support from the company’s lenders and enhances our financial flexibility going forward,” Pappas concluded.Currently, Star Bulk’s fleet includes 71 operating vessels and 3 newbuilding vessels under construction in China. All of the newbuilds are expected to be delivered during 2017 and 2018. Additionally, the company has one chartered‐in Supramax vessel, under a time charter expiring in September 2017.last_img read more
